The Magic of Music
A Reminder of the Everyday Magic of Teaching Music

“You surely have the best job in the world!”
We were often told this during our Musical-In-A-Day and Musical-In-AMonth programs. And sure enough, each day we had the privilege of bringing a performance to life with a group of energetic, enthusiastic students.
However, please remember that, as music teachers, we all have the best job in the world. There are so many highs — witnessing the euphoria of a completed performance; a classroom-wide grin spread like a wave after singing a favourite song; and a single student quietly puff with pride after a solo performance with the band.
But these bursts of magic can get buried beneath the difficulties: the uncooperative students, the timetabling problems; battles for musicmaking spaces; reporting headaches and funding issues.
So, as you begin this new teaching year — remembering that “what we focus on expands” — here are a few moments to notice, the quiet magic that reminds you why this really is the best job in the world.
Where The Magic Happens
Notice how:
- playing together naturally builds teamwork and camaraderie
- all parts are recognised as different, but equally important
- mistakes are made often, and by everyone
The Prestige
Music Creates Belonging
Observe (and Remember!):
- the personal satisfaction of mastering a piece
- overcoming nerves to feel the joy of performance and applause
The Prestige
Music Builds Confidence
Wonder at:
- the magic of ‘hearing’ the black dots and lines transform into music
- the joy of ‘owning’ a piece of music you’ve previously only heard
The Prestige
Music Is Experienced
Marvel that:
- everyone has different musical preferences, and this becomes a source of acceptance and celebration

Music Values Difference
During a school day full of demands and difficulties, the humble music classroom is a portal to beauty, emotion and connection — for students and teachers alike.
It truly is where magic happens.
